Pathanamthitta district lies in the erstwhile "Central Travancore" region of South-Central Kerala. The district comprises of low-land (Upper Kuttanad region), mid-land and high-range areas. It is bounded on the west by Alappuzha district, on south by Kollam district, on north by Kottayam district, on northeast by Idukki district and east by Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

Pathanamthitta is known as the headquarters of pilgrimage tourism, for the large number of pilgrims it receives. The famous Hindu pilgrimage centre of Sabarimala, is situated here. The world famous Christian Assembly of "Maramon Convention" is an annual affair held on the banks of River Pampa, in Maramon village near Kozhencherry. Pathanamthitta is a land well-known for religious tolerance.

The Aranmula Boatrace during the Onam Season is also a center of attraction among tourists. Aranmula Kannadi (a mirror made up using a combination of 5 metals) is another specialty of Aranmula.

Pathanamthitta District consists of 3 Lok Sabha Constituencies and 8 Assembly Constituencies as per the old delimitation.

As per the new delimitation, there is only one Lok Sabha Constituency - Pathanamthitta and 5 Assembly Constituencies. All the Assembly Constituencies are part of Pathanamthitta Lok Sabha Constituency.

Konni Ass. Const. : Panchayats of Enadimangalam and Kalanjoor in Adoor taluk + Panchayats of Mylapra, Malayalapuzha, Konni, Pramadam, Vallikode, Thannithode and Aruvappulam in Kozhencherry taluk + Panchayats of Chittar and Seethathodu in Ranny taluk

Aranmula Ass. Const. : Municipality of Pathanamthitta + Panchayats of Omallur, Chenneerkkara, Elanthur, Naranganam, Kozhencherry, Mallappuzhassery, Aranmula, Mezhuveli and Kulanada in Kozhencherry taluk+ Panchayats of Thottappuzhassery, Koipram and Eraviperur in Thiruvalla taluk

here are lot of changes effected in Pathanamthitta due to the impact of new delimitation. Pathanamthitta's share of Assembly Constituencies reduced to 5 from 8. The Assembly Constituencies of Pathanamthitta, Kallooppara and Pandalam cease to exist. However, Pathanamthitta got a new Lok Sabha constituency which comrpised entire district and parts of Kottayam district.

Adoor Ass. Const: Kodumon from former Konni transferred to Adoor. Pandalam, Pandalam Thekkekkara and Thumpamon from former Pandalam transferred to Adoor. Enadimangalam panchayat from former Adoor transferred to Konni.

Konni Ass. Const: Enadimanagalam from former Adoor transferred to Konni. Vallikode and Mylapra from former Pathanamthitta transferred to Konni. Chittar and Seethathode from former Ranny transferred to Konni. Kodumon from former Konni transferred to Adoor.

Aranmula Ass. Const: Pathanamthitta, Omallur, Chenneerkkara, Elanthur, Naranganam, Kozhencherry and Mallappuzhassery from former Pathanamthitta transferred to Aranmula. Eraviperur from former Thiruvalla transferred to Aranmula. Ayirur from former Aranmula transferred to Ranny. Mulakuzha from former Aranmula transferred to Chengannur.

Ranny Ass. Const: Cherukol from former Pathanamthitta transferred to Ranny. Ayirur from former Aranmula transferred to Ranny. Chittar and Seethathode from former Ranny transferred to Konni.

Thiruvalla Ass. Const: Kaviyoor, Kunnamthanam, Anicadu, Mallapally, Kallooppara, and Puramattam from former Kallooppara transferred to Aranmula.
